Lubby Nugget - 'Subtle Crucial'
Moon Ska Europe

These Ex- Moon Ska 'Yorkshire Reggae Rocksters' may have released this well over a year ago, but as it kicks such huge amounts off ass, a review was needed...

One thing a lot of bands in the scene fail to do is be original - and I don't meant original in the sense of playing the same old shit but with a bit of your own style thrown in, I mean a style of your own. Lubby Nugget are brave enough to be different, and what they play is amazing. This is a rich blend of rock, ska and reggae, something which you may think has been done before but not like this.

The best songs on this album are hard to choose - they're all really good, but the ones that stand out are 'Trevor's Pole', probably the heaviest song on the album, with great riffs and rough vocals (which I had on repeat for about an hour)...
There's a good mix of styles on the album, with some stronger ska songs - like the fast and upbeat 'Rambo No 5', and 'Clatsby's Donut Diner', another really sweet ska song. Although all  the songs have a reggae vibe - mainly due to the style of Kerry's voice, the stronger reggae songs are ace, like 'Flash Pimp' -  the lyrics are truly disgusting (like the rest of the songs....), and 'SDW' both are really good slow paced numbers. It all speeds up a bit with the double quick 'On the Floor', another really tight ska song and another of my favourites. The wicked '1-900 Tomsis' with some really funny vocals backed up by a really strong horn section.

'Subtle Crucial' is jammed packed full of fantastic songs, with great vocals and the tightest horn section, much better than any of their rivals bands'. Lubby Nugget has since undergone an almost complete change in line up - which I sincerely hope hasn't affected the style and quality of the music they play 'cos I can't wait to see these guys live and I'll be looking out for their new release 'Land of Lubby' EP, out on Good Clean Fun  Records in the next few months.
