Long before Spankboys' new
EP 'Medication' had been released officially, I had already heard
some great stuff about it - due to the fact that I worked their
managers' girlfriend. Apparently this EP was digitally recorded,
which has improved the sound quality a lot. Also, the tracks on this
were written specifically for a CD, instead of a live audience (like
their 'Adventures In Blue Flash' CD), which has made the sound a lot
better and stronger.
The title track from this is great, and as usual, with a really
catchy chorus - and has received Radio1 airplay. The other tracks on
this are all good, with variation between the tracks - some songs
more ska, others more calypso, some more upbeat than others etc. The
closing track, 'El Funnolini' is - as all you gig-goers will know
-is referring to the amusing funnel trick that Spankboy perform at
the end of each gig by inviting a member of the audience onstage to
down beer through a funnel in return for a CD (no, it's not how I
got the CD)!
They have come along way since their first release - they've toned
down the horns, there are better guitar riffs, vocals are clearer
and louder - I assume all of this is due to the digital recording
and better mixing - and this is accompanied with some good backup
harmonies. This is a great, upbeat, and enjoyable EP for both those
who know Spankboy, and for those who don't. Hurrah!
