Golfing on the moon tour, 27th Oct, London, Garage

Line Up: Mixtwitch, Gash, Whitmore, 4ft Fingers

Not being able to resist Mixtwitch’s lovely bassist Ronan on his 27th Birthday, I travelled down to London to help them celebrate that night at the gig. Mixtwitch kicked off the show with a great set, which I really enjoyed, although Jen and I were the only ones there who knew all the words. Yes, all of them. The crowd really got into this set as Cags repeatedly asked everyone to come down to the front for a good ol’ skank, which many of them proceeded to do. They did some songs off their old album, ‘Funny Because It’s True’, e.g. 'Golden Goodness' and 'Groupies', although they were mostly from the Moon Ska Europe released ‘Smile For The Money Shot’ (which hasn’t been out of my CD player for the past month). The Although they had refused to play my favourite song ‘Gifted’ as they don’t know it (??), the bastids.

Up next were Gash, which again, I didn’t manage to catch much of, but from what I saw they were auctioning off a McDonalds Happy Meal ‘Sitting Duck’ that had previously been happily sat on one of the amps. Again, the crowd seem well taken with them, and they managed to get quite a pit. I’m thinking maybe I should pay more attention to bands if I have to write about them. Just a thought?

I tried to pay more attention to Whitmore, as they had made such a big impact on me before, but with the distraction of a certain aforementioned bass player it was pretty hard. Whitmore played a blinder of a set, mostly playing songs from the new album 'Smoke The Roach', which I really should pick up a copy of. Whitmore get a great reaction from the crowd as usual, and once again Mixtwitch’s Ronan got up with them to sing ‘Alison’. They have a good variety in their style of songs, with some more punk tunes, and some with a dash of reggae thrown in for good measure. All in all, a great set.

4ft fingers entered the stage with the national anthem playing, and Dave (drums) holding a union Jack…interesting? Their songs have a very strong drum sound in them and they give off a really good vibe. They play a wicked blend of really fast hook-laden tunes, which gets the crowd going like crazy. The songs are even better live as they are on their new album, 'From Hero To Zero', out on Golf Records, which has got some great reviews, and  can really see these guys making it bigger and bigger in the UK scene and even breaking into the US.

This was a really cool gig, we celebrated Ronan’s birthday in style, and a big thanks to who ever it was let all of Mixwitch, Whitmore, Dougie and Bov of 4ft Fingers fame, Caz, Jen and me stay on the floor of their lovely gaff.
